Family Fitness

I am an advocate for family fitness. I love going to my local YMCA for family fitness classes. Why, you ask? First of all, it shows my boys how important fitness is no matter how young or old you are. Second, we get to spend some quality time as a family doing something healthy. Some classes we have been tried are: Family Drums alive, where we play the drums on the stability balls; Family Yoga, a favorite in my family; Family Open Gym; a free for all with balls and hoops. Some classes I want to try are: Family Fitness, Family Latin Hip Hop, & Family Bootcamp.

So I have been thinking of other family fun fitness activities there are to do. Fitness Cheerleader had a great post on her blog about how to make fitness fun with kids. I have to admit, my boys did enjoy bossing mom around for awhile. In the summer we are all about being outside whether it is riding our bikes, or the boys riding their bikes and mom running with them, playing baseball, playing soccer, playing tag on the park playgrounds, swimming at the beach, taking nature hikes, or setting up an obstacle course in the yard.

But what about the winter activities? We live in Minnesota and it is cold and snowy here for months. I plan on trying out snowshoeing and cross country skiing with them in the near future, as well as down hill skiing. We go skating and sledding but on those really cold days (single digit weather days or better yet below zero days) we like to stay in. Ok, I like to stay in, I am a freeze baby. That is where our Wii comes into play. The Wii has been a wonderful addition to our home. Gone are the days where you sit idle in front of the TV playing video games. Have you ever seen a 5 year old play Mario before? My boys are completely sweaty within minutes of hopping up and down while making Mario or Luigi jump over obstacles. I let them play Wii Fit and set it up for them to run. It is so funny watching them run so fast that their Mii trips and falls. Some other family friendly Wii games are Nickelodeon Fit and a Jumpstart Get Moving Family Fitness. I have not had the pleasure of trying either of these games both they look fun and easy for my 5 year olds. For those with older kids, there is Just dance and  Just Dance 2 (ok my boys will sit in the background and dance along anyway), or the new EA Sports Active 2 with heart rate monitor. This game is fun and a workout! It is circuit training that works the upper body, lower body and has cardio as well. Talk about a full workout. You are guided through the routines by your own virtual Personal Trainer.

So what do you do with your family to get them out and be active?

Leave a comment and you will be entered into a random drawing to win an EA Sports Active 2 FOR THE WII! (Sorry only the Wii version is being given away here).

It’s very cold here in Michigan too, so we’re doing a lot of Wii playing. We don’t have very many games but we make full use of the ones we do. 🙂

Well I usually push my lil man in the stroller so we can get out and go for a walk when its warm. But he just runs around the house and I chase after him as well

Hi There! I’m not really interested in the contest. I just wanted to let you know that we’re big on family fitness too! We try to incorporate our daughter in our daily workouts. It’s a lot of fun and we’re establishing a love of fitness with her.

We like to to DVD workouts with her – her favorite ones are the Turbo series (Turbo Jam, Turbo Fire). We also like to play Wii and the XBox Kinnect with her – the only gamining systems I’ll allow since they require physical movements.

Keep working out with your kids, and I look forward to reading your blog!

Yay I so want this game! My daughter works out with me every day outside or inside. During the winter she does DVDs with me. She did a little of P90X with me today and she is only 2 months shy of 5. She laughed the whole time.

We have “work out” time together. When my 1 year ols is awake we turn the radio on and dance. Now he dances all the time and it is so cute!

Would LOVE to win the EA SPorts Active. We’ve been enjoying Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution together and this would be an excellent addition!
